THE SUMMERLANDS CHUFFER

General Purpose Chuffers

Because these Chuffers are designed to fit a wide range of locos, it is impossible to give instructions so these are simply guidlines:

1.For the Chuffer to function correctly on an internally fired loco, the chimney must ideally have a minimum internal diameter of 9.5mm and an internal length of 47mm. This will ensure free gas flow round the Chuffer and ensure that the Chuffer can operate correctly.

2.When setting the position of the Chuffer, ensure that the entire sounding slot is inside the chimney – this may mean that the top of the Chuffer is within a millimetre or so of the top of the chimney. If there is plenty of chimney length, then ensure that the entire Chuffer is inside the chimney.

3.If it is necessary to cut your exhaust, then ensure it is firmly supported. If it is necessary to bend it so that it is positioned under the chimney - make sure you leave enough straight pipe for the Chuffer to push on to.

4.When fitted, ensure that the Chuffer's sounding slot is clear of the chimney wall so that it is not muffled. The top of the Chuffer is marked with a line to show the position of the slot.

5.The brass tube fitted to the Chuffer may be shortened by carefully cutting with a fine hacksaw or cutting disc (always wear appropriate eye protection if using the latter). Please remember that the brass will be soft and must be properly supported for cutting.
