Fitting the Chuffer to a Roundhouse twin-exhaust model (such as later models of Lady Anne, Katie etc.) involves removing the smoke-box and cutting the twin exhaust pipes. Fitting to some of the earlier Roundhouse models is more complex, but certainly possible for someone with basic skills. Fitting to Accucraft locos is generally more simple as the exhaust unscrews and can be accessed through the opening smoke-box door.
However, if having read the fitting instructions , you are in any doubt about your ability to fit the Chuffer, please seek advice from someone with model engineering skills (not Roundhouse please!). We cannot accept responsibility for any damage caused by incorrect fitting.
If your loco is still under guarantee, then the cutting of the exhausts on a Roundhouse loco could affect the guarantee on these and associated parts – if in doubt please contact Roundhouse. Fitting to an Accucraft loco should not affect the guarantee, but any damage done would not be covered. If in doubt, contact Accucraft.
If, after purchasing a Summerlands Chuffer, you decide that this product is not for you – then you can send it back to us undamaged, within 56 days of purchase to D P Supplies, together with your receipt (or where and when purchased) and name and address, for a full refund of the purchase price (excluding any additional post and packing).
Some early Roundhouse locos have the pipes cut short and a tube pushed over the two. This was either open as a chuff "Enhancer" or crimped over as a condensate "Inhibitor". Either way you may well need a longer connecting pipe on your chuffer. Measure down from the top of the chimney to the top of the pipes to give us the correct dimension. We will then supply a chuffer of the correct length for your loco - or exchange your Chuffer for one. Alternatively you can cut the copper pipe in the centre and sleeve in a piece of K&S 5/32" brass tube. This will probably need to be silver soldered though. If in doubt - contact us.
For those wanting to understand the workings of small steam locos, I can think of no better book than A Passion for Steam by Marc Horovitz. It is also a great book for those who like to drool over some of the classic garden railway locos and is available from Atlantic Publishers
Here are the instructions and some fitting notes from fellow enthusiasts. We are always please to add notes on different models.
Roger Loxley of Roundhouse has taken the time to suppy us with the Roundhouse Smoke-box notes - but please note that Roundhouse are not able to supply smoke-box removal instructions.
We will update the fitting notes pages regularly as we get new info.
For those dismantling and modifying locos, I would highly recommend Tag Gorton's Live Steam Workshop. It is available from Atlantic Publishers
