Anything Narrow Gauge
(updated 7th Jan)
Simon Whenmouth, who is well known on the UK show circuit for his new and secondhand loco business, now has a page under the "Other Stuff" tab for his up to date lists. Apologies in advance for the temptation this will cause!!
Jurassic Models
(Updated Jan 12)
If you like fine scale, laser cut kits then you might like to check out the list from Mike Johnson at Jurassic Models here.
Beginners Guides -Accucraft Ragleth
The first three of an occasional series of Beginners Guides are now available to watch and feature a new Accucraft Ragleth. Part 1 examines the loco, Part 2 steams her up and clears a blocked gas jet and Part 3 sees the fitting of a chuffer. You can find them here.
There is a new Fitting page for the Aster/LGB Frank S thanks to Stuart Timms. See main story right and the page, with video here.
Roundhouse
SR &RL No.24
The new video on video page 21 features the fitting of an SCRH1 Chuffer to a Roundhouse SR&RL No.24. Lindsay Newton had the confidence to tackle this having read the notes on the fitting page here. He has let me have his own notes and photos, which I have added to that page, and has made this video in his unique and clever PineTree Junction style.
There is a new Coal Fired page here. And now a second Coal Fired page here, featuring videos from Harry Godding. They are both under the "Other Stuff" tab. They are nothing to do with Chuffers, but I am sure you will find them interesting!
The definitive list of Chuffers can now be seen here
Check out the
Chuff-acoustics page here to find out what makes the chuff and how to make it even better
In the couple of months since I made the first four parts of the Roundhouse Bertie video series, I have made a number of modifications and enghancements to this basic loco. In the new video above, you can see its first outing with some heavy work to do at Roy wood's railway. Bertie clearly demonstrates how the load affects the chuff from the SCRH1 Chuffer.
Chris Haley sent me the video (above) of his Roundhouse loco, newly fitted with a Chuffer, hauling his transporter wagons. Although shot in HD, a software issue has made it rather low definition, but it is still excellent and well worth watching!
New Chuffer for the AML 0-6-0
I have just had a report back from the US that the new SCAC20 Chuffer works fine on the AML USRA 1:29 scale loco shown below by courtesy of AML. This is the SCAC20 and uses a custom, bottle type resonator developed for the Accucraft K4
Accucraft have been running this competition, which closed at the end of December and all the entries can be viewed at http://www.accucraft.uk.com/competition-entries/
I put a couple of mine in to show willing, but some of the entries are just superb. It is worth visiting just to see the Garratt made from two Edrigs and the Darjeeling A class made from one! Lots of great stuff. Oh yes and to my knowledge at least nine of the entries are fitted with the SCAC2 Chuffer!
Two New General Purpose Chuffers!
We now have two new Chuffers for very narrow chimneys between 8mm and 8.5mm internal diameter. The first is the SCGP5 which uses a longer version of the 3/16" diameter Chuffer developed for Tom Rolt. It has a standard 5/32" tube to fit 1/8" exhaust pipes but can, of course, be made with any fitting to order. The second is the SCGP6 which is a version for twin exhaust locos using Roundhouse cylinders, such as Brian Wilson's "Jack" .
Chuffer for New Mamod Mk II
Thanks to Klaus Zoettl in Austria we now know that the SCGP4 fits the new Mamod Mk II "Steam Train".
Rob Bennett (of Busybodies fame) has just converted an elderly meths fired Roundhouse Dylan to 7/8ths scale. This loco combined short exhaust stubs with a long chimney so, with a couple of key measurements we were able to make him a custom chuffer for his loco. You can see his superb conversion and hear the CHUFF in Rob's video on Video Page 23 here.
Roundhouse Fitting Video
The new video at the bottom of this page is a brief demonstration showing how a Chuffer is fitted to a Roundhouse Katie, Lady Anne, Billy and others that have the simple three screw fixing and twin exhaust pipes. There is more video of Katie hauling IOM stock on Video Page 15.
Below you can see a brief demonstration of how to fit a Chuffer to a Roundhhouse Katie, Lady Anne, Billy etc.
If you click on the "Video Finder" button, rather than the drop down menu from it, there is an index of all the videos on the first page. In order to limit the size of the menu, I am filling in some of the spaces on earlier pages so check out the menu to find the loco of your choice.
If a Chuffer is not listed for your loco - you just need to let us have some measurements and we will be able to tell you if there is one that will fit. And if not, we may well be able to make one that will. See the Buying page for contact details.
We need to know the chimney (stack) internal diameter and internal length. Then we need to know the exhaust fitting (e.g. 3mm thread on most Accucraft) or exhaust pipe diameter (OD) if fixed. Then finally the distance from the top of the screw fitting (if applicable) to the top of the chimney. Contact me (Chris) at coxhillcottage(at) yahoo.com or Nigel at DP-supplies on enquiries(at)dp-supplies.co.uk
Fitting a Chuffer to most Accucraft locos is only a five minute job? And it is the same for the Roundhouse VoR and Silver Lady!
That it is important to always read the instructions if fitting to Roundhouse Twin exhaust locos - even if you have done it before. The cutting heights for Russell, Bertie and the Darjeeling B are non standard.
The 1988-91 Roundhouse Lady Annes have the fixed smoke-box as with Jack etc. See the fitting notes for Argyll and Fowler.
Don't Phone Roundhouse!
Please remember to use the fitting notes here on the website and please do not phone Roundhouse for instructions. Roundhouse are busy making locos for us to enjoy and are still getting loads of requests for information that they are not able to give.
