Here is a video of the trial that I carried out on the Earl Martin "hole" using my modified Accucraft Edrig. This loco has a hissy edge to its chuff - much more so than my Accucraft Wrekin which is essentially the same power unit.
In order to compare, I cut a small piece of K&S 3/16" OD tubing as a sliding cover so that I could do a series of open hole and closed hole clips.
The hole does reduce volume but it seems to round off the sound. On balance I prefer it with the hole open.
