Richard Page has come up with a simple method, but it is not for those of a nervous disposition and I cannot recommend it as I have not tried it. Here is what Richard wrote:
"I recently purchased 2 chuffers for a Cheddar Goliath and a Cheddar Reisa. According to your website there was a need to virtually dismantle the Reisa and quite a complicated amount of work for the Goliath. (Note - Samson has a similar Smokebox)
I have just successfully installed chuffers on both with a total time of less than half an hour's work for the two. All that was needed was to gently tap off the front of the smoke box. This can be done with a wooden drift on the false hinge on the left hand side. Slide the Chuffer down the funnel, mark the exhaust pipe 20mm above the bottom of the chuffer when the top of the chuffer is just below the top of the funnel, and cut. I used a Dremel which means the cut cannot be at 90 degrees but it takes virtually no time and the exhaust pipe can be supported by holding it with some pliers.
Then slip the Chuffer over the exhaust; ensure the steam outlet on the Chuffer is well away from the side of the funnel by turning it to the best position. The longest operation was putting a slight bend in the exhaust to get the right tightness of fit. Push the smoke box front back on and the job is done.
Wonderfully simple and a wonderful improvement to the sound of the locos."
Please note that Richard has given this account on the basis that it is one option. It could damage your loco and if you are in any doubt - please do not attempt it.
Dave Herning bought a second-hand Cheddar Samson from the Merstham Show and within a few days had fitted the SCGP3 Chuffer, re-sprayed it and taken some photos. Here are his fitting notes:
1 Remove body fixing screws from under footplate and running board 10 crosshead in total.
2 Remove 2 slotted screws in each body side by cab front and at cab rear sheet top rail.
3 Remove both side of boiler heat sheilds and servo/battery pack (see top photo).
4 Under cab floor remove 1 screw and shakeproof washer for boiler fixing.
5 Boiler steam pipe is under boiler and can now be loosened, once free boiler will remove rearwards.
6 Inside smokebox loosen 2 hex head screws and remove 1,leaving 1 in by a couple of threads, also remove lubricator holding nut inside smoke box. The smokebox will twist off and come away (see middle photo).
7 Measure exhaust pipe and cut of to length for chuffer [SCGP3] [40 MM was removed from this loco].
8 Crimp chuffer if sliding fit too loose (or put a slight bend in the exhaust pipe - cb) and fit to exhaust pipe, remember to have chuffer sounding slot inside of chimney. (see bottom photo).
9 Refit smoke box and fasten 2 hex head screws.
10 Refit boiler assembley and screw union nut to steam inlet block, careful not to crossthread nut,its awkward but can be done, take care, screw under cab floor for rear boiler ftg and tighten.
11 Refit heat shields, battrey pack, servo etc. Fit body sides and back rail.
12 Steam up and enjoy sound and no more mess on bodywork.
